TITLE: Cartographic Materials Cataloging Librarian
DEPARTMENT: Collection Services

SUMMARY: Reporting to the Director of Collection Services (90%), working
with the Curator of Special Collections/Curator of Maps (10%), the
Cartographic Materials Cataloging Librarian performs original and
adaptive cataloging primarily for atlases, other books with maps and
other cartographic materials in the Roger S. Baskes Collection, and
assists the Curator of Maps and Head of Special Collections in the
management of the Library's collection of cartographic materials.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
In Collection Services: Primarily responsible for original and adaptive
cataloging for cartographic materials and related material in other
formats, using current cataloging and description resources to meet
national standards, ILCSO consortium requirements and local
specifications. Other formats may include, but are not limited to:
monographs, serials, maps, graphics and manuscripts (individual and
collection level), and digital materials. Uses a variety of
technical/electronic programs to compose related correspondence,
memoranda or other relevant department communication. Consults with
other librarians in matters relating to cartographic cataloging.
Participates in the implementation of policies, and in the development
of procedures and workflow governing the work of the section. May assist
with project planning and implementation. May participate in institution
wide activities. Performs all other tasks or activities needed for the
achievement of departmental goals, including assisting in retrospective
conversion activities and maintaining the integrity of the local and
consortium online catalog.

In Special Collections: Assists the Curator of Special
Collections/Curator of Maps in managing the Library s collection of
atlases and other books with maps, particularly new acquisitions. Duties
may include, but are not limited to, preliminary listing of atlas gifts,
planning space allocation, checking for duplicates, and checking
dealers  catalogs.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: ALA accredited Masters degree in Library Science; minimum 2
years experience in original and adaptive cataloging in an academic or
research library; current working knowledge of cataloging rules,
standards, practices, tools, including AACR2, MARC, LC subject headings
and classification system, authority control, LCRI, and Catalogers
Desktop; bibliographical knowledge of one or more European languages;
commitment to the effective application of national and international
cataloging standards for bibliographic control; experience using OCLC
and an integrated library system, (Voyager preferred); strong computer
skills including experience with personal computers, office productivity
software, and network-based tools in a networked environment; strong
interpersonal, organizational and problem-solving skills; effective oral
and written communication skills; ability to respond effectively to
changing needs and priorities; ability to work both independently and in
cooperation with colleagues in a service-oriented, collaborative
environment.
Preferred: Experience in original and adaptive cataloging of
cartographic materials, (manuscripts, early printed, and modern maps and
atlases); familiarity with cataloging rules, standards, practices and
tools for non-book formats, such as Graphic Rules, DCRB, Cartographic
Materials: A Manual of Interpretation for AACR2 and special thesauri,
such as AAT and TGM; familiarity with the application of core and
minimal level cataloging; advanced degree in the humanities; interest in
the history of cartography.

Desirable: Proficiency in Latin and a European language; demonstrated
involvement in map librarianship and education with national and
regional library organizations (ongoing participation encouraged);
experience or interest in the use and application of emerging digital
metadata standards and services for cartographic materials; knowledge of
or ability to learn HTM, SGML and/or other text-encoding systems;
experience in project planning and goal setting.

SCHEDULE: Full time, 35 hours/week, Monday through Friday; exempt
status. Three year appointment.

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
