    The Catalog Dept. at UC Berkeley told us that LC intended to use
GMDs only for materials which required a machine to use them, e.g.,
microforms, computer files.  Berkeley followed LC's lead.  Since most
OPACs have the ability to generate and display labels for material types
such as "maps" from the coded MARC data, adding a GMD for cartographic
materials would seem redundant.

The GMD is always optional.  Library of Congress Rule Interpretation
1.1C
lists all of the GMDs that LC applies, and cartographic materials is not
one
of them.  You probably know that.  I can't find any evidence that [map]
was
ever correct. Its use may be a local practice to let users know that the
record describes a map, not a globe nor an atlas. (That is just my
guess).
As for the period.  The GMD is supposed to follow directly after the
title,
before the : if there is a subtitle, or the / if there is only an
author.
Therefore, it seems that the GMD should come before the period.
