Subject: MARBI papers of interest to cartographic community
Date: Wed. 22 Jun 2005

Dear fellow Maps-ters:

The chief paper of interest for maps people before the
Machine-Readable Bibliographic Information Committee for ALA Annual is
Proposal 2005-4/R which builds on Proposal 2005-4 that was discussed at
Midwinter. The purpose of the proposal as it currently is written is to
change field 752 (Added entry - hierarchical place name) to allow for
inclusion of some additional geographic entities (city subsections,
extraterrestrial areas, and other geographic regions or features) and
adding field 662 to serve as a subject added entry in hieerarchical
order. The proposal is trying to accomodate multiple thesauri, which
complicates things. Various agencies are currently using field 752 in
ways not meant for the field to be used. It is hoped that adding some of
the geographic entities not currently accounted for in field 752 and
adding field 662, non-standard usage of field 752 will end.

There's also a topic paper exploring how FRBR might impact record
communication that will be discussed at the Sunday meeting. If you're
interested in this, you might want to take a look at the paper.

Sincerely

Susan Moore
MAGERT liaison to MARBI
