Overview
The US Geological Survey (USGS) is a world leader in the natural sciences. The USGS provides reliable scientific information to describe and understand the Earth; minimize the loss of lives and property from natural disasters; manage biological, water, mineral and energy resources; and enhance and protect our quality of life. For more information about the USGS, visit http://www.usgs.gov/

The USGS’s Cartographic Applications and Processing Program (CAPP) is currently seeking motivated students to support challenging Geographic Information Systems (GIS) projects. Students will gain valuable experience using state-of-the-art GIS software from ESRI, including ArcDesktop, ArcIMS, ArcGIS Server, and Enterprise ArcSDE. Students will apply geographic and cartographic principles and best-practices to perform spatial analyses, geospatial data management, and solve real-world GIS problems.

Description of Duties
The USGS’s CAPP supports a wide range of GIS projects, exposing students to a variety of GIS related experiences. Varying levels of GIS, database management, programming, cartographic, and computer knowledge and skills are needed. Students will work on projects matched to their skill level.

Major duties include:
• Geospatial Database Development: including, scanning, geo-registration, vectorizing, and attributing
• GIS Processing: including spatial data organization, map development, map interpretation, image processing, spatial data editing, and generalization.
• Spatial Analysis: including model-building, scripting, and tabular data analyses.
• Cartography: including web-based cartography, cartographic research, posters, and presentations.

Experience/Educational Requirements:
Since the primary purpose of the work is to provide students with real-world GIS experience, students interested in GIS careers are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have strong computer and data processing skills. Formal education and coursework in geographic, cartographic, and GIS principles is highly desired. Experience with ESRI GIS software is also desired.

Other Requirements
Former students who graduated more than 12 months ago or who left school without graduating are not eligible.

The Federal Government is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
