Indeed, and amen! I am not sure that the chuckles at the contestant's inarticulate statement are well founded. As Alice pointed out, she was trying to answer a simple question that she was obviously aware could not be answered in the simple and smiley way she was expected to deliver it. She did better than most high school students I know who would want to compete in a beauty pageant (ha! As if I knew many of those ;} ). After all, not only was this a tough question, the answer required her to deliver a criticism of the education system. And she had to be friendly and smile while she told the 'social studies' proponents why we need to study geography. Whew! This girl had guts.

It *was* good for some chuckles, but I was told that Miss Teen South
Carolina acquitted herself to a large extent on the Today Show (and
indeed they have details at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20473692/).

And as others have stated, if it draws attention to geography education
and like such as, uh, South Africa, and uh, the Iraq, it's not all bad.

For those of you without speakers - here's a version from Lucy with
subtitles.

Here is the same video with subtitles. I can't believe I'm sending this
out to the world since I'm in the South, but it's just too precious.
