Subject: IFLA Geography and Map Libraries Section

Dear Friends,

At our most recent meeting in Seoul, Korea, August 18 - 25, 2006,
our section discussed the future of our group and recent new guidelines
being considered by IFLA (International Federation of Library
Associations and Institutions).

Our immediate concerns are with the number of member associations
and institutions represented and plans for our next meeting in Durban,
South Africa.

Under the new IFLA guidelines being considered, a section should
have a minimum of 50 members. We seem to fall in the 41 to 47 member
category, from time to time, so are just short of what the new standard
might be.

We would like to ask that institutions that are already members of
IFLA, but have not added the Geography and Map Libraries Section to
their profile, please consider this. The cost is an additional 49 Euros
or a little over $63.00, if you have used your two free section choices.
We have seen some libraries that have large map collections and their
administration has made only one section selection, leaving one open.
For you it would not cost anything to add our section.

We also have openings on our Standing Committee, but you have to be
a member not only of IFLA, but have selected our section as part of your
profile. The deadline for Standing Committee nominations is February 7,
2007. The next nomination will be February 2009, so you need to act
soon.

Other map library associations and institutions who might wish to
join IFLA and our section, should contact www.ifla.org and find the
proper fee, based on United Nations guidelines.

If you would like me to contact your library director and ask for
your libraries' membership in our section, please send me the e-mail
address.

   Our next 3 meetings will be in Durban, South Africa (8/17- 24/2007);
Quebec City, Canada (8/10 - 15/2008); and Milan, Italy (August 2009).
