The map library community in the United States may be interested in the
plight of the Geography and Map Library Section of IFLA.

Geography and Map Library Section IFLA Can it survive !!!!!!!

Dear librarians

The Geography and Map Library section have severe problems in having
members and activity in the group.

At the moment the number of required members is below 40.

The activity of the standing committee and section is below an excepted
level.

Should we dissolve the section now ?

For many years this section has suffered from very low activity,
especially between conferences, the chairman and secretary have each
year struggled to get enough members and to plan for some papers in one
or two session on the annual conference.

As new chairman I don’t find this satisfying – it has been impossible to
activate more than very few SC members in the work. The active people
don’t find this suitabel with the amount of work, just to produce a
number of papers at each conference and then nothing more.

It is more and more difficult to have funds to go IFLA conferences, it
is more and more difficult to get activity from map librarians in this
section.

Maplibrarians have obviously found other places like LIBER, SLA, ALA,
ICA , ICHC etc which is prioritized.

I have already asked different mailinglist for Maplibrarians about their
opinion – nobody have suggested to continue the section even everybody
acknowledge the need for international cooperation. They just see this
done in other foras.

Therefore I have to propose dissolving this section, unless there will
be some reaction and readiness to work, from the community within 2
months in order to prepare something for the annual conference in
Gothenburg in august.

Best regards

Henrik Dupont

Chairman of the Geography and Map Library Section
