Dawn and others (not on MAPS-L) make an excellent point. With 20/20
hindsight, in one job where it was pretty clear the potential number of
customers was declining, I spent more time on trying to get new
customers than I should and less time on making clear to my supervisors
what our role could be (my immediate supervisor had the foresight of a
blind ___ -- fill in your choice of dumbness) if they would fund a
campaign using the resources available to us ($ for gas was all we
needed - probably would have amounted to $200 or less).

Anybody supervising or managing should have both strategic and tactical
plans for the organization they head. For those of you not clear on
what I'm talking about, the strategic plan is what you want to have
accomplished in the long term, at least five years or more, and gets
updated every year. The tactical plan covers what you want to have
accomplished by the end of the current fiscal year and probably also a
second section that's the draft for next fiscal year.

Having learned the lesson I mentioned above, after that, I have always
had a longer-term, not quite strategic, plan. In the next job after the
lesson-learning, when I interviewed for the position, I talked to the
practice leader (basically the manager of the technical staff in the
local branch of the consulting firm) at during the interview about my
need to know where he wanted us to be at the end of the year and in the
longer term. He answered my question and then wanted to know why I had
asked. I told him about the lesson-learning and that I wanted to do
everything possible in my proposed position to help all of us reach
those goals. Then, when I got the job, guess who got the task for
developing both plans. Sigh!

When I retired I set six objectives which constitute my long-term plan
and some intermediate goals that constitute a tactical plan with just a
couple of intermediate objectives to complete in the next 18 months to
build on the objectives of the long-term plan.

HTH.
