I have been trying to develop a geographic data repository service for faculty members and students since 2005 but with the limited sucess. My hope of developing this service was to create a geographic data portal where alll kinds of location-based data could be stored...data purchased by library as well as data created or purchased by researchers. The data in the geographic data portal could be searched however, access to data depends on individula permissions.
In order to start this repository service I created ArcSDE databases for different faculty members (two levels of passwords---full access and view only) and encouraged them to store their research data in our server. Incentive for them is that data will be backed up, documented, and accessible to them even if their graduate research asistance has left the university. Besides, their research work can be found by others in the university through the geographic data portal. Hopefully this will start more collaborations.
Here is the link to our simple Digital Map and Geographic Data portal http://map.princeton.edu/metadataexplorer/. All kinds of geographic data can be searched, viewed, downloaded through this portal. The example of faculty geographic data can be viewed by clicking on BROWSE tab then Department Projects.
