We're digitizing cultural atlases and are having trouble with attributes
that
might include language, ethnicity, religion, tribe, affinity bloc, etc.  The
objective is to create a geodatabase that uses a standard.  This will also
help with hierarchical grouping so that web maps can be generalized at
smaller scales (and to reduce the hundreds of items in the legend!).  Your
thoughts and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

--The Australians us a classification standard, but it is small and only has
a geographical hierarchy (see
