Cartographic Technology Specialist
Branner Earth Sciences Library & Map Collections, Stanford University

The Cartographic Technology Specialist reports to the Head of the
Historical Map Room. The incumbent will support the project efforts to
digitize and accession digital map content in support of the ongoing
initiatives within SULAIR and with outside donors in order to create a
robust digital map collection at Stanford. In addition, the Technology
Specialist will use Drupal to create web services for the Map Room and
users as well as possibly developing tools for map displays. The
incumbent will assist the Head with reference and with technical support
for faculty and student projects.

Duties

1)Project management for the creation of digital map content. (50%)

a.Provide day-to-day operational oversight of numerous ongoing projects
and new projects that arise, including contributing to all steps in
project workflow.
b.Facilitate movement of materials in and out of the lab in both
paper-based and digital formats; manage materials once physical items
are on the campus or are in Stanford’s custody; metadata remediation;
and quality control.
c.Help coordinate the daily operations of all of the people and groups
involved with the projects to ensure a smooth and continuous flow of
work including file management, troubleshooting, exception handling, and
coordination of tasks amongst the lab staff and the collections librarians.
d.Coordinate, monitor and provide input to the development of standards
for consistent quality control and quality assurance of digital materials.
e.Maintain project documentation, issue status reports, and track daily
progress.
f.Manage and train new staff in implementing lab procedures and protocols.

2)Creates and maintains the Map Room Web presence and creates Web-based
content (tutorials, blogs, etc.) in consultation with the Head of the
Map Room. (30%):

a.Supports Web services for users.
b.Works in conjunction with the programming staff in DLSS to provide
input on map interfaces on other platforms, such as the library catalog.

3)Provides day-to-day support to the Map Room and the Head Librarian. (20%)

a.Works in conjunction with Head Librarian to provide access to digital
and paper-based content using a variety of different tools and media.
b.Serves as an Expert Partner to provide computer support for unit staff.
c.Keep abreast of the new technologies in digital humanities, digital
history, and neo-geography to find ways to best integrate new tools into
research and teaching.
d.Provides reference assistance for the Map Room.

Qualifications (Required):

Educational:
1.Bachelor’s Degree required.

Project Management:
1.Demonstrated ability to handle day-to-day management of workflows to
ensure continuous work processes. Knowledge of digital workflows is a plus.
2.Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team,
3.Ability to work with all levels of staff, donors, faculty and students.
4.Highly organized, detail-oriented, dependable and with a high degree
of trustworthiness.
5.Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively
in English.

Technical:
1.Sufficient computer knowledge to competently handle file management
and accessing networked resources.
2.Demonstrated expertise in support of Windows operating systems and
variety of software applications.
3.Knowledge of web-based applications and standards such as xhtml, xml
and scripting programs. Knowledge of Drupal a plus.
4.Willingness and ability to learn about database systems, specialty
computer applications and new technologies.

Other Specialized Qualifications:
1.Knowledge of standards pertaining to preservation of digital materials.
2.Understanding of preservation issues involved in reformatting print
materials.
3.Willingness and ability to learn about metadata and cataloging
standards for cartographic materials.

Qualifications (Desired):

1.Knowledge of web-based applications and standards.
2.Knowledge of and interest in emerging digital geospatial technologies
including Geographic Information Systems.
3.Knowledge of a Romance language.
