The Interstate Mining Compact Commission (IMCC), in cooperation with the
Office of Surface Mining and the Mine Safety and Health Administration,
is sponsoring a benchmarking workshop on mine mapping in Pittsburgh, PA
on February 15 and 16, 2012. The workshop will focus on several recent
developments and enhancements in the mine mapping area since our last
series of workshops on this topic in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Based at least
in part on the work that has been done in response to OSM’sapplied
science program, there have been advances in both technologies and
approaches regarding acquisition, restoration, scanning,
geo-referencing, digitizing and electronic access to maps. Of particular
importance to the SMCRAstates is the identification of potential
subsidence probabilities in order to determine potential property damage
from underground mining activity. The timing is therefore ripe for
sharing the results of these developments with the states and federal
agencies so that all can benefit from new knowledge and enhance their
ongoing respective efforts in this critical program area.

Attached is an agenda for the workshop which was developed by a steering
committee composed of state and federal agency representatives based on
responses to a survey that was distributed by IMCCto potential attendees
in September. It will address four key areas:

   * Recent Development and Innovations in GIS, Database and Scanning
     Technologies
   * Accuracy and Reliability of Mine Maps
   * Serving out Mine Map Information on the Internet
   * Archiving and Storage Issues – Infrastructure Challenges

The workshop will also include an update on OSM’ applied science
projects in the mine mapping arena and provide an opportunity for
attendees to discuss the coordination of mine mapping efforts to
increase efficiency and share resources. The workshop will also provide
an opportunity for attendees to tour and receive a briefing on the
University of Pittsburgh’s Collections and Preservation Facility,
including a presentation on the CONSOL Energy Mine Map Preservation
Project. As always, the workshop is intended to be interactive in nature
and there is generous time incorporated into the agenda for roundtable
discussions and for sharing among attendees, as well as an opportunity
for Q and A.

The workshop will be held at the Sheraton Station Square in downtown
Pittsburgh. Hotel reservation information can be found on the
registration form. While there is no fee for this workshop, we do
require all attendees to register using the attached form. In order for
us to plan adequately, we request that you *_register with us no later
than January 15_*. There is a limit of 50 spaces for this workshop.

There is a very limited amount of funding from OSMfor travel assistance
for state attendees who require it. Please note that this funding is
intended for those states that would not be able to attend the workshop
without it. We will attempt to accommodate as many attendees as
possible, but our goal is cover at least one person from each state
requiring travel assistance. Please indicate on the registration form
whether you will require travel assistance. If you are approved, you
will be working directly with OSMto arrange your travel. *_All requests
for travel assistance must be received by IMCCno later than January 6_*.

For IMCCnoncoal/hardrockstate members who would not qualify for
OSMtravel support, if you are interested in attending the workshop and
need travel assistance, please let us know and we may be able to provide
some assistance through the IMCCTravel Reimbursement fund. Again, we
would appreciate knowing of your interest by January 6.

Should you have any questions or require additional information, please
do not hesitate to contact Greg Conrad ([log in to unmask]
<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) or Beth Botsis([log in to unmask]
<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) at IMCC. If there are others in your
agency that should be aware of this workshop, please forward this e-memo
on to them for us. We look forward to your participation in this
valuable workshop.
