I have posted a blog entry entitled "Year of the Open Map" which
attempts to bring together some of the happenings around Google's recent
decision to charge for higher usage of their Maps API. There are some
really good links embedded in the sources quoted that explain the use
and value of many of the tools that are enabling website developers and
others to "roll their own map tiles" or otherwise use alternatives to
Google Maps. It does show the rich vein of innovations in cartographic
output methods that are becoming available to those prepared to explore
this new arena. Not all maps have to look the same.
