In the 1960's I was a graduate student in charge of the maps section in
the University of Oklahoma Government Depts. We had many piles of
Captured Japanese WWII that were not processed since no one could read
Japanese. By piles. I mean 3-4 feet high. I have no knowledge of
what became of them but do know they were sent to the Library as part of
the AMS original shipment after the War.

I assume you are only interested in the original Japanese maps and not
those reproduced in English during the war by AMS. If you are
interested in the latter, there are many sets cataloged in OCLC by the
University of Florida Map & Imagery Library. When I was head of the
Library, we were using the AMS index/ists as inventory sheets. After
I retired, the staff conducted a major project to itemized many of the
topographic sets. I do not know if these sets were done. If you are
interested in this version I suggest you contact, Carol McAuliffe, Head
of the UF Map and Imagery Library. Her email address is

We were always curious about the Japanese maps and over the years,
there have been a number of researchers who were interested in finding
them. It is great to learn they are being scanned and will be available
to a much wider group of historians, etc.

The Harvard Map Collection also holds over 10,000 sheets of Captured
Japanese WWII maps of East Asia at a variety of scales. We have indexed
them, but access to them is primarily through our card catalog. We also
acquired our sets from the AMS after the war. We have not yet scanned
any of those sheets. You can search the sets we have at the following

Hi, all,

Efforts are underway at Branner Library to catalog, scan and make
available our set of Captured Japanese WWII maps that were distributed
to libraries in the United States by the Army Map Service after the end
of the war. We believe we have about 10-12,000 sheets from China, Japan,
Taiwan, the Philippines, Manchuria, and Korea (North and South).

Phil Hoehn, when working at UC Berkeley, had their complete set
cataloged and these can be found by searching OCLC. We also know of the
sets at Clark University and the Library of Congress. I have noted that
Central Oklahoma has some (how many?) and the University of Wisconsin
(how many?). Anyone else? If you do hold these maps, either cataloged or
uncataloged, I'd be interested to know the following.

1. Are they cataloged?
2. About how many do you have? (pieces and sets)
3. Do you know how you got them?
4. Have you scanned them?

Thanks for any information you can provide.

Best,

Julie
