I agree with Joel, seems to me that it would be impossible to provide an
/accurate/ answer. I'm thinking of the many, many private/family
cemeteries across the country that are not documented anywhere and even
if they are would they include the amount of area covered? Likely not.
For instance, there is a very, very small cemetery plot up on a hillside
about 2 blocks from my house that was likely at one time the family plot
for the original owner of the farm/orchards in the part of Lemont my
house sits on. It is very small, something on the order of 50 x 75 feet,
with headstones dating back to the turn of the 19th century. I have no
idea if this plot of land has been ever measured or is recorded in any
official records or otherwise. And then what about "lost" cemeteries
that were either eventually overtaken by forest or swamp, or those built
on top of over time (I'm thinking of the recently-discovered cemeteries
in New York and Boston).

I think the best you can do Ed is provide a ballpark figure to your
patron after some research such as Joel has provided.

Paige

This strikes me as something exceedingly difficult, if not impossible,
to answer: http://www.gao.gov/assets/240/239428.pdf .

  From the report:

Most states regulate cemeteries, although not all cemeteries in
those states
are subject to regulation.11 Specifically, as shown in table 3, of the
44 states that responded to our survey covering cemeteries and cemetery
operators, 34 regulate cemeteries, and 27 of these states noted that
not all
cemeteries are subject to regulation. About half of the states that
regulate
cemeteries require at least some cemetery operators to be licensed,
although the licensing requirements vary across the states. Of the
33 states
responding to this issue, 23 said that at least some cemeteries must be
licensed, whereas only 16 of these states require at least some
cemetery
operators to be licensed.
