Subject: [carto-soc] Ordnance Survey app launched

Ordnance Survey have just launched their first iOS app (with Android to
follow).
It is called OS MapFinder:
https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/id577097874?mt=8&affId=1736887
OS Press Release at:
https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/news/2013/01/os-mapfinder-launched.html
Although the app is free it is a commercial venture, with OS digital
data being available to download from the same source:
"10 km bite size pieces of map specific to the users exact requirements
for £2.49 (per 1:25 000 tile) or £0.69 (per 1:50 000 tile)"
As a prominent geo-cynic noted on Twitter that gives "Coverage of
Britain @69p/10km sq = £1582 for 2293 tiles"

As they say in the advertising world - other products are available.
One that is getting quite a lot of attention is http://www.directu.com/
"directU Maps is a FREE offline map browser application powered by OSM
(http://www.openstreetmap.org). Download it from the App Store NOW!"

Cheers
Steve
