You may not be aware, but Penn State is working through cataloging,
scanning, and mounting all of our Sanborns in our collection, including
the early Philadelphia volumes. We have cataloged all of our titles
except for a handful of bound volumes, including Philadelphia, and about
1/3rd of our collection is available online at:
http://www.libraries.psu.edu/psul/digital/sanborn.html
and we continue to mount new images at this site as they are completed.
I know our Preservation Dept. is currently working through Philadelphia
sheets that are unbound and in map drawers, I can find out specifically
which year they are dealing with if you wish.
And yes, only those Sanborns not within copyright are being placed
online, once we have all of those up we will likely go back and begin a
process of discovering which post-1922 titles might not be under
copyright and any that are not will then be scanned and mounted.

The two sets I'm looking at were corrected annually through either 1958
and 1967. There is a copyright renewal notice on the title page of each
volume (the date varies depending on the original publication date) and
it's clear that they have been revised. The quick answer, then, seems to
be that the updated volumes I have are still copyrighted.
Do you have any plans to put the first half of the Philadelphia set
(vols. 1-14) online (can't hurt to ask).

Copyright for Sanborn maps is complex. As you state, anything 1922
or older is in the public domain, but even some sheets the Library of
Congress has that were originally published before 1923 have Copyright
issues because Sanborn did copyright the paste downs. That being said,
we also found that Sanborn did not always renew the Copyright on all
cities; it seems to have concentrated on large cities and many smaller
communities are now public domain. Unfortunately, you will need to have
a Copyright search on each publication to verify this; we do not have
the man power for this and are using the 1922 date as our break point.
We only putting up later work when we receive confirmation of other
dates being out of Copyright, mostly getting this from patron searches.
If you have the 1922 and early Sanborn sheets and there are no paste
downs on them, you should be able to put them up. If the sheets were
revised and republished, they would have a new date on them; be sure to
check the index sheet for updates. The Philadelpha set at LC is mixed.
Our inventory
(http://www.loc.gov/rr/geogmap/sanborn/city.php?CITY=Philadelphia&stateID=45)
shows that volumes 1 to 14 are pre-1923 and a quick check reveals there
were no updates, so we could put those online. The latter volumes are
likely in Copyright, so we would not scan those.

Hi,
I'm a bit confused about copyright as it pertains to the Sanborn
volumes. It's clear that everything published 1922 and before is in the
public domaine but does that apply to maps that have been revised
annually? Do renewal filings count? The first 14 volumes of the
Philadelphia Sanborns were originally published 1922 and before but they
were revised on an annual basis.
I have volumes from the mid-1950s and mid-1960s whose copyright was
renewed in the 27th-28th year time frame. Does this extend the original
copyright even if they were originally published pre-1922? Does the pre-
1923 copyright only apply to volumes that were never revised?
I know this is murky territory but does anyone have experience in
this situation? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
