Some wags on the ALA Exec.Council seem to think that it will be cooler in the C
anyons of New York City than on the Lakes of Orlando. I saw notice of this in
the e-mail newsletter "Leads from Lama," this week. Leads also mentioned that t
ransportation in New York City would be easier than Orlando. This may be true i
n N.Y.C. on July 4th. As a native New Yorker it is hard to decide between Orl
ando and Manhattan. Transportation problems and the heat are the main complaint
s that surfaced after Miami. Some ALA members are complaining about three summe
rs in the South (New Orleans, Orlando, Miami). No mention of midwinter in Chica
go and Philly however entered this discussion. I cannot imagine that Council w
ould argue that the crime rate in New York City is lower than Orlando. On the o
ther hand N.Y.C. is about the most expensive convention city in the U.S.

Alice,

I received a message which was forwarded from Althea Jenkins, Executive Directo
r, ACRL, who said yes it is official; the ALA Executive Board voted this week t
o move the 1996 annual convention to NYC. The dates are supposed to be the sam
e, at least for now.
