Laura,

Yes! There is an entire list of codes available (I have a copy if you want
me to fax to you). The "YL" in the code indicates a publication date of
1984. Contact me directly if you would like the entire code list. There are
also others for Rand McNally and General Drafting Company.

Only way I know of is to keep a list once one sees a code on a dated
map. I have a list for all the codes from 1979 through 1996 -- would
people be interested in a posting of these?
YL corresponds to the year 1984.

An article in the Travel Section of The New York Times of Jan. 14,
1990 has an explanation of the Gousha date coding (which I am having
trouble understanding at this time on Saturday morning). It says that
YL represents 1984. The article is by Betsy Wade, in the "Practical
Traveler" column (p. ?), and is called "Maps that try to hide their
age." There is also some info on Gousha date coding in the Western
Association of Map Libraries Bulletin of June 1982, p. 341. If you
have trouble tracking down the NYT article, let me know, and I'll give
more details or send you a photocopy.
