        In response to the recent message from Katherine Rankin about relief
in cataloging of aerial photos, we  have also seen both blank and "z" used
in the fixed field.  We  believe the most logical and frequent usage,
however, is blank. This makes sense to us  because as Katharine said,
"relief isn't actually being represented," The Cartographic Materials; A
Manual of Interpretation AACR2, gives the definition of Relief as "The
elevations of the inequalities, collectively, of a land surface; represented
on graphics by contours, hypsometric tints, shading, spot elevations,
hachures, etc."  In the new book Maps and Related Cartographic Materials;
Cataloging, Classification, and Bibliographic Control, the chapter on Remote
Sensing Imagery contains the statement for aerial photographs "...the record
must show that relief is not indicated.  Relief means how the characteristic
is represented by symbols, and therefore is not recorded for the image".
Thus blank is the standard which will be reflected in the revised edition of
Cartographic Materials...AACR.

        The issue of coding "Relief" for satellite imagery is a little more
murky.  The field is left blank for "black and white" imagery.  However
there has been some use of "z" (other) for the Color InfraRed and Natural
Color.  The standard has been evolving to use blank since the relief is not
shown by a color symbol or shading created by a cartographer. Using "z" for
"other" might imply to a savvy user such as another map librarian that
relief has actually been depicted and result in confusion or disappointment.
But what do we  know, Florida is pretty flat anyway :-)

        On the other hand, remote-sensing maps which have been purposely
enhanced with information such as shading to represent mountains should have
the appropriate relief code recorded.  The "i" for pictorial really isn't
appropriate for the relief code for any remote sensing image and highly
unusual for a remote-sensing map.
