I should have thought of this. We have scanned our Gazetteer to AMS 1:25,000 Maps of East Germany (AMS Series M841) from 1955 and put them on Internet Archive and they are some of the most popular items we have ever put up (https://archive.org/details/byumapcollections shows over 1,600 downloads). If you want to let me know the specifics of which gazetteers you are thinking of discarding I can see if we have them and digitize them. Alternatively, if you want to send them to me I’m happy to put them in the queue for upload to the Internet Archive.

Like many, I suspect, I have rarely use bound AMS/DMA gazetteers anymore.

However, several of our staff still prefer to use them for place name browsing and coordinate comparisons. In some cases, only the bound gazetteers solves the issue.

Is anyone out there “pdfing” these bound volumes for local use? The information contained in these volumes would still be available for browsing but shelf space would open up. (And would not to rely on geonet)

The Marriott Library is currently discarding or redistributing lots of decades-old government documents. Among the candidates for withdrawal a number of older gazetteers published by the “War Department, Army Map Service, and later by Defense Mapping Agency. I can’t say I’ve used any of them for a long while, so I’m amenable to their withdrawal, but I thought I’d check with colleagues on whether there’s still a reason to keep them around. Any comments?
