At the National Library of Australia, Canberra

Monday September 10, 6-7pm

Chris Fleet - Map Curator

Collections and Research Department, National Library of Scotland

Bartholomew’s Australian mapping and the imperial agenda

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Edinburgh-based mapmaking firm of John Bartholomew & Son Ltd printed a growing number of maps both for the Australian market and depicting Australia. This talk will look at recent research into the newly-accessioned Bartholomew Archive held at the National Library of Scotland, and what it reveals about the creators of this mapping, the various publications the mapping was included in, and its audiences. How powerful were these maps in defining broader British imperial ideologies and in shaping views of Australia?

Chris Fleet is Map Curator at the National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh where he has worked since 1994.. His main work focuses on digital mapping, and making historic maps available online. He has also actively researched and spoken on map history and the NLS map collections, and is the co-author of a number of popular books on Scottish mapping.
