Hi.

I realize I already through my two cents in but now I am going for a nickel because I do feel strongly about the issue.

Linda's points are bang on. Similarly in a province such as Saskatchewan, many of the rural communities have disappeared. By comparing gazetteers it would be relatively easy to spot which ones disappeared and when.

I, too, would suggest keeping paper copies over fiche. We have a large number of government publications in fiche and the material in many of the tables is unreadable given the tiny font size that had been used; additionally, because the paper is often quite thin, it is hard to read the fiche because the numbers from the obverse side of the page show through.

Hello,

Given the place name changes after the fall of the Soviet Union, I would vote to keep them. That way, if someone is finding information on a place that existed while an area was under Soviet control, they can find them. I am not sure that this older information is in GeoNames.

However, you might want to consider comparing your fiche editions with your print editions. A few months ago, I found a fiche edition that was issued by DMA that was exactly the same as the one issued by the USBGN. The DMA version was fiche and the BGN version was in print. I kept the print.

The Marriott Library is currently discarding or redistributing lots of decades-old government documents. Among the candidates for withdrawal a number of older gazetteers published by the “War Department, Army Map Service, and later by Defense Mapping Agency. I can’t say I’ve used any of them for a long while, so I’m amenable to their withdrawal, but I thought I’d check with colleagues on whether there’s still a reason to keep them around. Any comments?
