Some information for those of you who use OCLC.

1. The Library of Congress recently assigned a new source code for use in
subfield $2 of field 072 (Subject Category Code). This code can be used
immediately in OCLC and will be added to the various versions of the
OCLC-MARC Code Lists (paper, PRISM Help and web) in future revisions. For
an example, see #10676271 (83-80975).

lcg Table IV "Table of subject subdivisions" in Library of Congress
classification schedule: Class G (Washington, DC : Library of Congress).

2. The following Technical Bulletins were recently distributed to users:
--Technical Bulletin 218 (Bib Notification)--July 1996 (This TB describes a
cataloging maintenance service that makes upgraded cataloging records
available to institutions that have previously received--and added holdings
to--a less-than-full-level bibliographic record in the OLUC.)
 -- PRISM EUR-OP Resource File--July 1996 (This TB describes a new resource
file of documents and how to access it from PRISM. The EUR-OP files
contains records for documents which are published by the Office of Official
Publications for the European Communities.)

3. On August 11, 1996, OCLC invalidated the following elements or codes for
use in PRISM Cataloging:
Value *c* for Publication and copyright date in DtSt. Value *t* should be
used instead. Value *c* should now only be used on serials to indicate
*Serial items currently published*.
Value *d* for Detailed date in DtSt. Value *e* should be used instead.
Value *d* should now only be used on serials to indicate *Serial item
ceased publication*.
Field 211 (Acronym or Shortened Title). Field 246 should be used if
appropriate.
Field 214 (Augmented Title). Field 246 should be used if appropriate.

Scans have been run on the obsolete values *c* and *d*. 555,695 records
were converted in April, 1,406 were converted in June, and 611 were
converted in August.. Fields 211 and 214 were manually corrected in March.
Only 91 records were changed. Final scans will be run later this year.
