Sevim, the University of Utah’s Marriott Library digitized its Sanborn maps of Utah cities years ago, and we included special fields covering (1) Street names and (2) Business or building names, so that someone looking for a specific named feature, such as a church or business, could locate the correct sheet.  We also set up a pattern for naming sheets to take into account that there are several editions for some cities; the pattern being, for example, Salt Lake City, 1911: Sheet 232.

Also, our discovery interface is set up with facets to target both city name and publication date.

We just learned that our Digital Projects unit was successful in getting a grant to get Sanborn maps digitized!

Making sure the digitized versions will be findable through metadata is on the agenda.

Would be appreciative of pointers toward good sources of information/right directions to pursue.



I’m writing as a monographs cataloger (primarily print, ebooks, ETDs) who inherited maps cataloging from a now-retired colleague.  I’m moderately familiar with cataloging sheet maps in RDA and of course MARC.
