I had also contacted both GPO and USGS and received similar information.

I understand from another USGS contact that there are printers just coming out that are able to make much higher quality printouts (waterproof and light resistant) but they are not yet available in sizes large enough to print 7.5' quads and there is no information as to when/if such copies might be available from USGS print-on-demand, let alone at what cost. I am in a very small state and am pretty sure that even if similar in cost to present paper topos I won't be able to buy coverage for NH, forget anywhere else. Earlier posting makes clear GPO's limitations in obtaining copies.

Meanwhile, beta versions of some of the new topos are available for some states. Every week or so I look at the NH ones to see if these new "topos" have their contours or hydro layers yet -- they did not last time I checked. So far, I can turn off the underlying orthophoto base layer and print an 8.5.x11 piece of a map showing roads and place names (including names of water bodies that are not shown) and not much else.

Hello,

As the CUAC Liaison to the U.S. Geological Survey, I contacted Richard
Huffine at the USGS Library with this question. Below is his response.
Linda Zellmer

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The new US Topo product will be available as a digital product only. Any
printed product will be purchased and produced in a print-on-demand
fashion. The USGS Geography Program is not printing any copies of US
Topos for distribution of any kind.
If GPO wanted to purchase printed copies for Depository Distribution,
I'm sure that USGS would assist them in that effort but USGS is not
printing these maps at all otherwise. The Depository Program relies on
riding existing print orders for the production of copies for FDLP
distribution and the USGS is not producing printed products for these
maps by default.
For over a year now, I have not seen a single shipment of USGS
topographic maps in the 7.5-minute series.  I have seen several
shipments of BLM Surface and Mineral Management series, Forest Service
maps, miscellaneous USGS maps in various series, and CIA maps, including
some very fine large format ones (of Afghanistan-Pakistan border, and
West Bank settlements, for example).
Has anyone else seen a shipment of 7.5-minute sheets?  These are with
GPO item numbers 0619-M-1 through M-50 for Alabama through Wyoming, M-51
for Washington, D.C., M-52 for the Pacific island territories, and M-53
for Guam, Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands.
