Brendan,

Thanks for the info about these maps. Are you able to provide an email
address/contact for those of us who might wish to contact the Survey via
email rather than by phone?

Thanks.

Angie

The Survey of Israel have revised and reprinted their wonderful
1:2,500 map of the Old City of Jerusalem

"Jerusalem: the Old City", Survey of Israel, 2006. Scale 1:2,500
5m contours. shows all buildings, roads, cemeteries, tree-covered
areas, archaeological sites, churches, mosques, schools, archways,
ruins etc. An update of the original edition of 1936 and reprinted
in a couple of revised editions since then. Index of major sites of
interest and streets. The map costs 20NIS which is about US$4.50.
Survey's code 1264

A Hebrew edition is also available but this is a few years older. The
two editions are not published simultaneously.
Note that the Survey of Israel's maps are generally NOT available
outside its offices, so this map is NOT available at any shops or
even the govt tourist office in the Old City.

Other maps of interest include:

- A 1996 colour reprint of "the Madaba map" (an ancient mosaic map of
Palestine from a ruined building in Jordan), reproduced by the Survey
and the Israeli Exploration Society from Palmer and Guthe's
Reproduction of 1906. This is on cardstock and costs 24NIS. Survey's code 1733.

- A reproduction of a sheet of Jacotin's Napoleonic era survey of
Palestine. Sheet 46 "Acre, Nazareth, le Jourdan". A Special Edition
for the Annual Meeting of the Israeli Cartographic Society 4/3/1999,
the 200th anniversary of Jacotin's mapping. Scale 1:120,000 (reduced
from the original), covers the Sea of Galilee, Haifa, Acre, Safed...
shows and dates locations of French Napoleonic camps and battles, c.1799. 20NIS
survey's code 1731.

- "The Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem 1099-1291", Compiled 1972,
reprinted 2001. Colour map of Palestine locating Crusader sites,
bishoprics, castles, battles, communities, roads etc. relief by
altitudinal tinting . Beirut to southern end of Dead Sea, and inset
of Negev to Aqaba. Insets of territorial changes and Near Eastern
Crusader states. Scale 1:400,000. Legends in English, Hebrew, and French.
Survey's code 1736

The website for the survey is only in Hebrew: www.mapi.gov.il but
most staff speak English. Ph 972-3-6231911 (Tel Aviv head office)
