ISHMap invites participation in its 2022 Symposium, in Montevideo, Uruguay, and online, from May 12-13, 2022, 9:30 am – 5:00 pm (GMT -3). Proposals may consider any aspect of the production, circulation, consumption, curation and exhibition of maps and mapping that contributes to our understanding of the past and present. ISHMap encourages proposals that consider maps in original contexts as well as maps used beyond an intended purpose or audience, ranging from the recent to distant past.

For 2022, ISHMap is particularly interested in proposals that focus on methodological approaches which might concern map history in the context of exhibitions, teaching and everyday life. Equally, we invite participants to explore the similarities, differences and hybridizations within cartographic history and practice, putting case studies in conversation with historical and cultural contexts and frameworks across time and space.

SYMPOSIUM SCHEDULE AND TIMING

The Symposium will take place in Montevideo, Uruguay, on May 12 – 13, in hybrid mode, a combination of in person and online paper presentations. Sessions are scheduled between 9:30 am – 5:00 pm (GMT -3), to facilitate participation in the Americas, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. We regret the inconvenient timing for participants in Pacific Time zones.

The Society’s annual general meeting will take place on Friday, May 13. All ISHMap members are invited to attend and participate in the meeting in person or virtually. Trustees for 2022-2023 will be elected in the meeting.

The 2022 Symposium will be hosted in Montevideo, Uruguay. The main Symposium venue will be the Museo Histórico Nacional<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.museohistorico.gub.uy%2Finnovaportal%2Fv%2F42193%2F33%2Fmecweb%2Fcasa_de_fructuoso_rivera%3Fcontid%3D42192%263colid%3D16978&data=04%7C01%7Cacope%40uwm.edu%7C9a4b6d6a82094766604c08d973e83c9e%7C0bca7ac3fcb64efd89eb6de97603cf21%7C0%7C0%7C637668263557754695%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=%2BJBp1qCF2YWMr%2FVqhdhRDh4G1uXFnf1IBK5D3Lnp%2Bkc%3D&reserved=0>.

SESSION FORMAT: ISHMap welcomes proposals for individual papers/presentations, coordinated panels and round table discussions. We are especially interested in innovative session structures that encourage interaction among participants, such as a panel with pre-circulated papers or joint authors or hands-on activity (such as in teaching, research, or curation of map exhibits).

PARTICIPATION: The Symposium welcomes in person and virtual participation and attendance. The Symposium anticipates offering hybrid sessions, with live presentations and debates including on site and virtual participants. In principle, should the health situation permit, there will be no all-virtual panels and the Selection Committee’s goal will be to create panels with at least 2/3 in person participation.

LENGTH: Paper presentations will be 10-15 minutes. Session length will vary depending on the number of papers or format; we anticipate that most sessions will showcase three presentations.

NUMBER OF PROPOSALS: Individuals may propose only one (1) paper. However, a paper presenter may also participate in a round table or other innovative special session.

LANGUAGE: The language of the symposium will be English.

NEW WORK: Contributions must be original and not substantially represent previously published work. Proposals will be evaluated according to their quality, significance, and relevance to the symposium’s goals.
