Job Description Summary

The Geospatial Research Facility (GRF) at Michigan Technological University invites applications for a full-time Geospatial Data Analyst or GIS Librarian to join the interdisciplinary research community in the Great Lakes Research Center. The GRF is seeking a highly motivated, intellectually curious professional interested in supporting research in GIS for environmental and social scientists. This individual will support multiple projects from across the campus community working directly in a collaborative environment with faculty and research scientists to solve geospatial research questions, develop GIS methodologies, document and manage geospatial data, and support the development and deployment of GIS web services and apps. The successful candidate will have a solid background in geographic information systems, geospatial databases, and the suite of ESRI GIS products especially ArcGIS Enterprise.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Participate as a collaborative team member on multi-disciplinary research that applies GIS techniques and tools to environmental and social science topics and problems.
2. Manage geospatial data and accessibility within ArcGIS Enterprise systems.
3. Execute data management plans.
4. Provide geospatial analysis and geostatistical evaluation for research projects.
5. Contribute to the generation of externally funded research proposals.
6. Manage university geospatial research data portal, develop training material, and broad user support.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

• Master’s degree in geographic information science, geography, library or information science (with focus on GIS), data science, computer sciences, or similar related field
OR
• Bachelor’s degree in geographic information science, geography, library or information science (with focus on GIS), data science, computer sciences, or similar related field, and 3 years related professional or research experience

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• Experience with database management systems, such as but not limited to, PostGRE SQL Server
• Recent experience with ESRI ArcGIS Enterprise or similar suite of products and services
• Recent experience in geospatial data management
• Experience with desktop GIS applications, such as but not limited to, ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Pro

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• PhD
• Experience working in a research environment
• Experience in geospatial analysis and geostatistics
• Experience managing projects and developing GIS methodologies for environmental and social science research
• Experience developing and writing research proposals
• Understanding of common programming languages such as Python, Javascript, PHP, and working with ESRI’s ArcGIS APIs.
• Experience developing and maintaining metadata
