Subject: RE: N&O: WA State Topos 25,000 and 50,000 scale

Carlos,

For the state of Washington and practically all other states, there are
a variety of non-USGS military maps published, generally at the 1:50,000
scale for modern maps but at the 1:25,000 scale many years ago. As far
as we understand, the 1:25,000 scale map series are all withdrawn and no
longer distributed as current maps by NGA. However the 1:50,000 scale
maps are. According to our records, there are currently about 36
1:50,000 NGA (and predecessor agency) maps covering the State of
Washington in Series V791. As you can see from the index map coverage
is very partial.

Best Regards,

Andy

Carlos,
It would not surprise me if you actually have what was produced and/or
distributed. U-Md., a regional depository, had a "full" collection of
1:24k and 1:250k USGS maps, but what seemed to be incomplete sets of the
1:100k and county topo series. And then only /very/ small numbers of the
1:25 and 1:50k series. My understanding is that the USGS 1:25,000 metric
series was short-lived; I don't think many were produced. (I think
that's true of the county and 1:100k, too.) I don't know the story with
the USGS/DMA 1:50K series, but maybe somebody with a better sense of DMA
products (Lee Hadden?) knows.

      Those are the first places I went to see if they were available. They
      are not available in those scales. There were a handful of (less than
      10) in the 25,000 scale and they were all in western Washington.
There
      was only one 50,000 scale which was also from western Washington.

      Carlos,

      While printed maps are nice to hold, so many people find the
online PDF
      versions produced by USGS helpful that I use these links in my library
      guide for maps:

         * USGS Topographic Maps
      http://nationalmap.gov/ustopo/__index.html
      <http://nationalmap.gov/ustopo/index.html>
           <http://nationalmap.gov/__ustopo/index.html
      <http://nationalmap.gov/ustopo/index.html>>
           "US Topo users can turn geographic data layers on and off as
      needed;
           zoom in and out to highlight specific features or see a broader
           context; and print the maps, in their entirety or in customized
           sections"
         * Historical Topographic Map Collection (The National Map)
      http://nationalmap.gov/__historical/
      <http://nationalmap.gov/historical/>
           <http://nationalmap.gov/__historical/
      <http://nationalmap.gov/historical/>>
           When searching, remember that quadrangles may be listed as
      belonging
           to states adjacent to the states being sought.

           The USGS is scanning all editions and all scales of topographic
      maps
           produced since the inception of the topographic mapping
program in
           1884. The exact number of maps is unknown at this time but
200,000
           is the number currently being used until an accurate count can be
           made. All 50 States, Puerto Rico and Trust Territories are
included
           in the effort to complete the collection.

           While trying to help a patron find a map, we realized that our
           collection for 25,000 and 50,000 scale is sorely lacking.
           I was wondering if anyone has duplicate copies of the Washington
           State 25,000 and 50,000 scale maps or who are just willing to
           discard them. We would give them a great home.
           Any help you can give us would be most appreciated.
