I had reason to visit the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute Library last May. They cleverly incorporated braces between the stacks by having them appear as arches -- an added attractive architectural element. Recently retired library director Judy Triplehorn was in charge of the design effort for those in earthquake prone zones who may wish to consult on the matter.

These photos of Canterbury University Library in Christchurch are a librarian's (or patron's!) worst nightmare!

Very lucky it happened well outside working hours (0430h, Sat morning).

Perhaps when building libraries in earthquake zones they need to put (liftable?) railings across the front of each shelf, like on yachts?
