Colleagues -

The Harvard Map Collection is pleased is pleased to announce the the
digital imaging of its collection of pictorial maps by Ernest Dudley
Chase. To find this collection, and other digital map offerings at
Harvard, you can search "Harvard Map Collection, digital maps" as a
title search in the Hollis online catalog which is available to the
public. The collection includes forty-seven examples of these unusual
and rare materials from the 1929 map of his hometown Winchester,
Massachusetts to his 1943 (2003 facsimile) Pictorial map of Loveland. He
produced numerous foreign and world maps during the period surrounding
World War II. A native of Massachusetts he began his artistic career
with the Butterfield Printing Co., of Lowell, Massachusetts in 1900 and
created his own greeting card business in 1908. He later wrote, and
published in 1926, /The Romance of Greeting Cards/, the first history of
he business. Pictorial maps are a unique genre of cartographic materials
and Chase's examples require intensive study to really appreciate the
artistry involved and the amount of detail that are a trademark of each
of his maps.
