JOB DESCRIPTION:

Position Announcement: Paid Internship, salary negotiable (part-time or full-
time temporary position, with possibility of extension)
Role: Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Programmer
Location: Cooperative Oxford Laboratory, Oxford , Maryland

This position is a paid internship. It can be either a part time or full time
position. It is a temporary position lasting 6 months to a year, depending
upon the individual s schedule. It is funded via the U.S. Sea Grant program.
There is a possibility of extensions. Estimated start date is May 1998. This
position will not necessarily require full time occupancy at the Oxford
Laboratory. If facilities are adequate at the individual s location, many of
the tasks can be accomplished there.

The primary job duty would be to interface data output from a numeric
environmental model to a GIS format, for display, analysis and model feedback
purposes. The model involves interactions between the Chesapeake Bay oyster,
environmental factors, and two parasites that cause major mortality in Bay
oyster populations. Project participants include the Cooperative Oxford
laboratory (Maryland Department of Natural Resources and National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration: GIS data integration), Rutgers University (oyster
physiology), and Old Dominion University (modeling).

The position will work from a conceptual Entity/Relationship framework, to
program numeric output and associated environmental data into an automated GIS
display and query environment. Principal software envisioned for this task is
UNIX ArcInfo and PC based GIS (MapInfo or ArcView). The grid module of ArcInfo
will be employed for data analysis. PC based vector GIS programs will be used
for display and query.

Programming experience is necessary for this position, as is a strong
background in GIS operations. UNIX ArcInfo (including GRID and programming
skills, or another applicable full feature GIS software) and PC based GIS
operations and programming (MapInfo or ArcView) are needed. Exposure to
estuarine and marine sciences is recommended. Modeling concepts recommended.
