Hi Kathleen and Ken,
I’m sure you’re aware Kathleen, but there’s an Egyptology department at Michigan and some of them specialize in GIS. Richard Redding is a curator in the Museum of Anthropology—he may well have a lovely idea for a map regarding Aida. He might also be able to pass along some ideas from other Egyptologists.
I couldn’t resist jumping in here since I am a librarian, but moonlight as an archaeologist in Egypt.

Subject: Re: Seeking ideas for music, opera, and artistic looking maps
Kathleen,
I am working on the assumption that at least one of the operas featured is Aida. The locale is somewhere in the Nile Valley, sometime during the history of ancient Egypt. There is a very nice two-sided map, Egypt's Nile Valley, National Geographic Society, 1995, which is relatively small, especially if not opened entirely. Since the deity that is invoked, Ptah, was associated with Memphis, in the northern valley in the region of the pyramids (and Cairo) and not far south of the Delta, this part of the map could be shown.
Also, if Handel's opera, Giulio Cesare, is included, this takes place in Egypt during the Ptolemaic era (one of the male characters is Tolomeo, Cleopatra's brother). The same portion of the map showing Memphis will show Alexandria and the Delta as a well.

I’m assisting with a library exhibit, “The Geography of Opera,” which will feature operas set in locations around the world, the moon, and even in outer space!
I already have “World Beat Music” http://blogpublic.lib.msu.edu/index.php/a-world-made-of-music?blog=55
Another world map that is not music themed but is artistic and exhibitable is Wyeth’s Map of Discovery from 1928.
Other maps or illustrations could either be specifically music-themed, or just plain lovely maps of places featured. An opera was found for every continent including Antarctica. Other locations are Under the Sea, The Moon, Outer Space, and Imaginary Places.
The exhibit is not specifically a map exhibit; the maps will enhance the main content, which will be music scores and posters and opera programs. For that reason the maps we select can’t be very large or complex or demand too much of the exhibit space or viewers’ attention. If you know of a map that fits these parameters, please let me know. The more exotic the locale, the better.
