I would also point out that whether a map (or a book) is a primary
source
depends on the context in which it is used.  A nineteenth century map of
the "Bible Lands," would not be a primary source for someone studying
the
Middle East in antiquity.  It would be a primary source for someone
studying nineteenth-century conceptions of the past, or studying
nineteenth-century printing techniques.
