Hi Lisa,

Not a public librarian, but I would suggest buying National Geographic travel maps, local recreation maps, sporting<https://scmaps.com/maps-by-state/ohio/>/fishing<https://gofishohio.com/ohio-fishing-information/ohio-lake-maps/> and boating maps, and any maps by local hiking clubs. In Central PA we have a company that does PA areas. They made one in Ohio.

I would also purchase some DeLorme Atlas and Gazetteers of your state and surrounding states. https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/575993

I would suggest getting world maps, especially ones with most recent changes like South Sudan.

Maybe some planet globes? https://shopatsky.com/collections/maps-globes/globes'

Then for fun, to engage people who aren't really mappy, try some fiction/fantasy maps. I try to buy at least one per year. The most popular are the Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings maps, but I have bought Star Wars maps, A Simpson's map of Springfield, 100 Acre Wood. I often find them on Amazon and they aren't expensive.

As for Sanborn maps, I would check out a subscription to Historical Information Gather's History Mosaic product formerly FiMO.
http://www.historicalinfo.com/fimo/

You can find many Sanborn maps at the Library of Congress, the interface to find exact sheets can be a source of frustration for casual map users.

While I like Historic Map works and use it often, it doesn't have the Sanborn maps, which people love to use for their personal family research.

I hope these help.

Regards,

Hello fellow public map librarian!
Others have suggested some fantastic sources, and those are certainly more than worth pursuing. The only other thing I might suggest, depending on how thorough you'd like your collection to be, is to get in touch with your local (city / county) agencies to see what maps they have. Most street / county maps are either GIS or PDF these days and could be downloaded, but establishing contacts with your local transportation / infrastructure and other agencies could lead you to additional cartographic sources, print or otherwise, that can help you capture the spatial aspects of Cleveland's past and present in your collection.

Hello map minds!

I'm a new (as of August) Map Collection Librarian in a public library! I'm tasked with ordering my first round of books, atlases, and collection items for this budget year. At the moment, I'm trying to understand which materials to order and where to review materials for purchase. So far, I've found a few cultural atlases that complement our collection, but aren't available nearby. I'm also ordering the most up-to-date editions of atlases that reflect our highest level of collection (road and statistical atlases for Cleveland and Ohio).

Can y'all recommend any resources you use to review newly published materials for the collection? I'm ordering materials through Baker
and Taylor. Any insight is appreciated!

Sincerely,
Lisa
