This reminded me of some geographical humor I encountered in elementary school.
 
In the second grade I had an elderly teacher who spoke proper Bostonian
English, pronouncing the word fine as "fiyun", nine as "niyun", etc. In our
geography lesson, she explained that the equator was an imaginary lion running
around the middle of the earth. I didn't learn what the equator really was
until several years later.
