We are currently in the process of revising our GIS cataloguing guidelines. At present we are looking at using the 300 field to primarily identify a GIS dataset.

To describe a GIS dataset we are also using fields like:

</datafield>

Not sure how much cataloging experience you have or if you use OCLC for your MARC records. I'm a Library Technician and do mostly copy cataloging. I don't catalog GIS datasets but I've taken a couple of GIS classes. I've done some research on cataloging them just for personal interest.
You can find dataset MARC records in OCLC/WorldCat and see what they do as an example.

Does anyone know of best practices for MARC encoding for GIS datasets? In our new catalog currently in development, we plan to use fixed fields to generate "resource type" facets. One such facet, we hope, will be for GIS datasets. Our problem so far is we can't seem to identify MARC codings that can be used to reliably identify GIS datasets in our catalog for this purpose.
The MARC codings aren't our only option for identifying these, but we'd prefer to use these codings where possible. I'd appreciate any thoughts, advice, suggestions, or resource recommendations for this. Thank you!

We do lots of MARC cataloging of GIS datasets here. We haven't been able to use any of the fixed fields to identify GIS data specifically, seeing as most values end up being 'not applicable' or 'other', or related to cartographic aspects of the material. We use genre (655 field) to differentiate geospatial data, as well as the 347 and 352 fields (though those two don't display in our OPAC and are not searchable). I'd be happy to send you our guidelines if you're interested.
