I happen to *be* one of those outsourced cartographers/scientific
illustrators. I left the USGS when the threat started looking ominous a few
years ago and I had a job offer at a firm I worked at before the USGS.
I do love aerial photography, but I loved my work at the Survey more than
anything I ever did, and would really give anything to go back, but I don't
see that happening.
At the same time, the outsourcing is a big mistake from a financial as well
as a quality standpoint - not to mention the careers it will squash. I'd be
happy to expound upon it more, but not without invitation. I suspect you
all know what I would say!
