Subject: Interesting Map Scale

While processing a map, I found that it had the unusual series of 26 x
25 minute and it was associated with the 1:62,500 scale which is usually
associated with the 15 minute series. So, I sent an email to the USGS
to find out what was going on. Here is their response:
*"You are correct that the 1:62,500 (scale) usually refers to 15 minutes
(series). Occasionally maps were prepared and printed with a slightly
different geographic area (non-standard size) to allow the map to extend
to a State border or include a geographic feature (island, peninsula,
lake, etc.) to make the map more useful to the reader.*

*Hope this helps.*
