From the Saturday, 11 June 2016, hard copy of the London-published 'i' newspaper, 'News' section, p. 19, col. 5, under 'Leisure':-

'Hillwalkers urged to swap apps for maps', by Henry Austin, begins -

Hillwalkers have been urged to brush up on their map-reading skills because modern GPS devices can lead people into trouble, even "situations where a 999 call has to be made". The Mountaineering Council of Scotland (MCoS) said that the technology can accurately work out direct routes from one point to another but what it cannot do "is read the ground in between". [. . .] Battery loss could also leave people stranded, the MCoS said. [. . .] "Real navigation involves you in the terrain . . . a lot more satisfying and intimate an experience than following an electronic arrow up and down a hill."

The quotes seem all to be from "a mountain safety adviser" named - appropriately in the context of this MCoS piece - Heather Morning:)

Francis Herbert (former Curator of Maps, RGS-IBG, London UK)
