Subject: Software for determining old map projections

I am studying some early nineteenth century maps by Aaron Arrowsmith
that show projection grids (graticules), but do not state what
projection was used. I was wondering if someone has developed software
to ascertain map projections based on the lines of the grid. I would
think that it would be fairly easy to develop something like this, but
have not been able to turn up anything via Google. Any leads?
