I hope that this message can be distributed uncorrupted, i.e. because
of file-transfer text may be a bit muddled. I hope to contribute
something to the discussion of how to incorporate non-traditional
cartographic materials within existing cataloguing processes. For us
up till now this doesn't mean that we have to change existing procedu-
res, but that we have to extend them.
Within the CCK (former Dutch Union Map Catalogue) we can incorporate -
besides traditional cartographic materials- also remote sensing images
and computer files. The items are described using a combination of
ISBD(CM) and ISBD(CF). I shall show you 2 records and hope to explain
what their function is. The records are based on UNIMARC, though field
135 [coded data field: computer files (provisional)] is not implemen-
ted in the system.
120, 121, 123, 124 are coded data fields for cartographic materials; a
lot of verbal information is herein translated into codes for retrei-
val purposes.

other specific fields are explained below.

UNIMARC tags 120, 121, 123, and 124 are not different for traditional
CM than for CM on computer files.
Field 3 of the ISBD(G) is the 'Material specific area'. In case that a
material can be defined in several classes -in this case CM and CF-
the field should be repeated. For Computer files this field specifies
the 'type of file' and 'extent'. e.g. "Computerdata (1 file, ca.
3,000-4,000 records)" or "Computerprogramme (3 files: ca. 1,500 bytes
each)". Unfortunately UNIMARC only provides tags for Cartographic
Materials (206), Serials (207) and Printed Music (208). As we create a
database for descriptions of cartographic materials we opted to use
field 3 for mathematical data.
We probably corrupted field 5 of the ISBD(G) 'Physical description
area' [= UNIMARC 215] a bit by enlarging the information a bit. Not
only the amount of floppy's etc. are stated, but also the amount of
files. If necessary I think one could also state the amount of bytes.
In the 'note area' [UNIMARC 3.., in this case 358] we try to describe
the potential of the publication, e.g. what the function is, how it
should be used, what texts it generates and what maps it generates or
which can be created and the subjects concerned.
In the same 'note area' [UNIMARC 3.., in this case 369] we state what
the system-demands are to be able to operate the programme.
I am well aware of the fact that remote-access cartographic databases
may pose different problems, as it probably is more difficult to
describe the potential of such a database. However treating the
problems one by one we may come quite far.

Up till now we have described 120 rs-images; however rs-tapes -which
contain only alfanumerical information- are not included.
A lot of technical information is coded in UNIMARC tags 121 and 124.
For explanation see the UNIMARC manual, ed. 1987. Verbal statements of
these are given in tags 306-344.
