The two most popular here at the Illinois State Library are:

USGS' Geographic Names Information System

mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis

Genealogists, historians, and archeologists (as well as myself) LOVE this
one.

Oddens' Bookmarks

oddens.geog.uu.nl/main.html

Maps, maps, and more maps.

NYPL has found that while we have databases available, and our readers

come in and use the internet, www, opac...they are not using the

databases which we spend a lot of money on. This raised the question

in my puny mind as to what databases are most popular/most requested

or used in map libraries. Somehow Proquest doesn't come to mind, but I

     may be wrong...

Might individuals send me your TOP TWO [NOT TOP TEN!] databases as

     used in your map library?

If I get a significant response, especially clusters of faves, I will

post the results. Or I will post the results anyway!

Many thanks. Just trying to improve or offer new services here in ye

olde paper map room, and am always open to stealing good ideas from

folks further out on the edge of technology than I am.
