Hi Dan,
At Stanford's Branner Earth Sciences Library until about three years
ago we classed the NGS maps together in a made-up set. We stopped that
practice because it wasn't working very well for us. We noticed that users
who browsed the map cases were frequently missing very nice NGS maps because
they were't filed with other maps of the same area, but in a general
world number we had assigned. There was also some inconsistency by
various catalogers in assigning call numbers. There were some minor
variations in correctly adding year and date to the made-up set call
number (some catalogers used year and volume and issue number). A more
serious inconsistency was the occasional classifying of an NGS map
separately, occasioned by accepting the call number found in an OCLC
record. The primary reason for keeping NGS maps together is, I
think, to help the occasional user who has an issue of the magazine and wants to see its accompanying map. We
believe we have solved that my putting a note in the magazine itself saying "Map in Map
Cases" and via out online catalog, where one can enter National
Geographic as an author, maps as a subject heading, and the year in the date field. That
results in a relatively short list to look through. We could, if
necessary, add the month in our keyword field. Very infrequently we've
had a user who wants to see all (or at least many) NGS maps and it
would, undeniably be easier for that person to have them all in one place. That request can be met in
part by the new CD-ROM set of NGS maps.
        Phil.
