The Making Maps book is going to be a better guide to the basics IMO
then longer more "academic" texts. It's more of a practical guide. For
other short but very well put together examples and guides to map topics
like Thematic Mapping, Choropleths, How maps lie etc. have a look at Ken
Fields "Cartography" (url below). It covers A LOT of ground so it's a
big book, but each topic is short, very well described with excellent
visual examples:
