My thanks to Daniel Seldin at Indiana University and to Paige Andrew at
Penn State for the reply to my query.

The numbers are G3535 - G3539,
with 3535 for general maps
     3536 for thematic maps by subject.

Presumably 3537 would be for regions (e.g. Baffin Island, or Ellesmere
Island)
           3538 would be for administrative divisions
and        3539 would be for villages, towns, or cities
