As a follow up to my coast to coast by water inquiry of today...among the interesting and
amusing replies a number of astute maps-l readers have referred me to William Least Heat
Moon's 1999 book _River Horse_ wherein the author,

"sets off aboard a small boat on his most ambitious trip yet, from New York harbor to the
breakwaters of Astoria, Oregon, almost entirely by water. He and his companion, Pilotis,
struggle to cover some five thousand watery miles -- more than any other cross-country river
traveller has ever managed -- often following in the wakes of our most famous explorers, from
Henry Hudson to Lewis and Clark."

I've therefore suggested that the patron get his hands on this book.

Thanks all, Rick
