This is a huge shock! Last time I was with David was for the 75th anniversary event celebrating the SLA G&M Division in Philadelphia at the SLA annual conference. Yet again he put his time and talent into organizing and coordinating a successful major event in our corner of the profession. In fact, I pulled the commemorative anniversary binder that he personally put together for that event off of my shelf earlier this week while cleaning out and preparing to move (our cataloging department will move soon, lock and barrel, to the floor below us) and thought about tossing it, but thumbing through it again made me decide to keep it because of so much detailed information about SLA G&M Division and its many people who made it what it was. I am now glad I decided to keep it, it becomes a small momento of what David left as a gift to all of us.

I have known David (and Barbara) since joining the cataloging faculty at the University of Georgia Library in late 1986 and he was always "in the thick of things" when it came to SLA in particular, and in map librarianship at large. Many years ago he moved from being in charge of the map collection at USC to their maps cataloger and he reached out to me with questions as he learned the details of this new skill. David was always jovial and outgoing, one of those individuals who made you feel like a friend from the moment you met him.

Thank you for sharing this news with David's colleagues and friends far and wide Bill. He will be sorely missed for sure.

Sincerely,

Paige Andrew

Subject: David McQuillan

It is with great sadness that I write to inform you that David McQuillan, map cataloger and former head of the University of South Carolina’s Map Collection has passed away.

David was employed with the University of South Carolina Libraries 1974 and previously worked in the University’s Geography Department. In addition to being the library’s first head of Maps, David served on numerous state and national committee as a member of the Special Libraries Association (SLA). David’s love of maps and travel led him to represent the University Libraries through his active membership in the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). For many years David was the library’s unofficial photographer of library events and staff parties.

He will be sorely missed for his many stories about his travels but also for his extensive knowledge of cartographic materials and his keen collector’s eye.

I will pass on any additional details as they become available.
