Subject: MAGERT programming in SF-- Maps & Disasters
Sender: Mary McInroy <[log in to unmask]>

"Earthquakes, Fires and Floods"--wasn't that a band in the 60s???

Actually no, it's the title of a program sponsored by MAGERT at ALA's
annual conference. This program will be held Saturday, June 16 from 2-4 PM
in the Moscone Convention Center, Rm 222. Come find out how maps and
spatial data assist those who deal with disasters every day. Description
from ALA's website is as follows:

"Earthquakes, Fires and Floods: Using Maps to Prepare for Disasters"
This program will present the use of maps and spatial data by three
government agencies involved with natural disasters, U.S. Geological
Survey, California Dept. of Forestry and Fire Protection, and the Federal
Emergency Management Agency. Each speaker will discuss how they use
Geographic Information Systems, spatial data and printed maps to avoid,
plan, and prepare for natural disasters. In addition, they will share how
librarians can obtain access to the maps and spatial data they use.
Speakers: Dave Sapsis, Fire Modeling and Behavior, California Dept. of
Forestry and Fire Protection; David P. Schwartz, Earthquake Hazards
Program, U.S. Geological Survey; Jim Buika, Region IX, Federal Emergency
Management Agency.

Hope to see you there. Check out the rest of MAGERT's San Francisco
schedule at http://www.sunysb.edu/libmap/magprogs.htm
